RTX Corporation History: From Radar to Jet Engines

RTX sits at the top of the global aerospace and defense hierarchy. It is not just a single entity but a massive amalgamation of some of the most critical industrial players in history. Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, the company was born from the 2020 merger of Raytheon and United Technologies. They kept the name Raytheon Technologies for a few years before rebranding to RTX Corporation in 2023.

The structure is built on three heavyweights. You have Collins Aerospace for aircraft systems. Pratt & Whitney for jet engines. And Raytheon for defense systems. The leadership rotated recently, with Christopher T. Calio taking over as CEO in May 2024 and becoming chairman in 2025. But the roots go back much further.

The Microwave Oven Origin Story

People often ask how a defense contractor ended up making kitchen appliances. The answer lies in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1922. Three scientist-engineers—Laurence K. Marshall, Charles G. Smith, and Vannevar Bush—started the American Appliance Company. They tried refrigeration first. It did not stick.

They pivoted to electronics. Specifically, they developed a “gaseous rectifier.” This electron tube converted alternating current to direct current for radios. It eliminated the need for batteries that died quickly. The technology worked so well that the company rebranded as Raytheon Manufacturing Company in 1925. They marketed the rectifier under the name Raytheon. It was a massive success.

The company incorporated in 1928 after merging with Q.R.S. Company, which made electron tubes and switches. They diversified again in 1933 by buying Acme-Delta Company. Acme-Delta made transformers and auto parts. This move set the stage for the electronics dominance that would follow.

World War II and Radar Dominance

The war changed everything. Early in World War II, English physicists invented the magnetron. This device generated microwaves. It drastically improved radar’s ability to spot enemy planes. American firms needed to mass-produce these tubes. Raytheon stepped up.

With help from MIT’s Radiation Laboratory, they secured the contract. The scale of production was staggering. By the time the war ended, Raytheon had manufactured about 80% of all magnetrons. They also pioneered shipboard radar, particularly for detecting submarines.

This research had an unexpected side effect. Engineers noticed the magnetron tubes could cook food. In 1947, Raytheon demonstrated the Radarange. It was a commercial microwave oven. It was huge. It was expensive. But the potential was clear.

Household Appliances and Defense Missiles

Raytheon bought Amana Refrigeration in 1965. Amana made refrigerators and air conditioners. Using the Amana brand and its distribution network, Raytheon launched the first countertop household microwave oven in 1967. They became a dominant player in the consumer appliance market.

But they never stopped focusing on defense. In 1945, they bought the Submarine Signal Company. This gave them deep expertise in maritime safety. With that capability, they developed the first guidance system for a missile that could hit a flying target.

The Lark missile debuted in 1950. It was the first weapon to destroy a target aircraft in flight. The Korean War accelerated development of the air-to-air Sparrow and ground-to-air Hawk missiles. Raytheon remained a top producer of missiles for decades. They built the Patriot antimissile system. They built the Phoenix missile.

In 1959, they dropped “Manufacturing” from their name. They were simply Raytheon Company now. They also bought Apelco-Applied Electronics that same year, boosting their commercial marine electronics strength.

Civil Aviation Expansion

Defense is only half the story. In 1980, Raytheon bought Beech Aircraft Corporation. Walter H. Beech had founded it in 1932. It was a leader in general aviation. Raytheon expanded further in 1993 by acquiring Corporate Jets Inc. from British Aerospace. This brought the Hawker line of business jets into the fold.

The combination created a powerhouse. They produced the Hawker 800XP and Horizon. They built the Beechjet 400A and the Premier I. They kept the popular King Air series of twin turboprops in production. They also made single-engine piston planes like the Bonanza.

Even more significant was the special-mission aircraft. Beech’s single-turboprop T-6A Texan II was selected as the primary trainer for both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy. It remains a staple of military flight training.

By 2011, Raytheon employed roughly 70,000 people. They sold products in over 80 countries. Their headquarters were in Waltham, Massachusetts. The global footprint was enormous. Then came the big merger. Raytheon joined with United Technologies. The new entity became Raytheon Technologies. Later, it became RTX. The history of the modern aerospace industry is written in these mergers. It is a story of technology shifting from radar to kitchens, and back to missiles. The cycle continues.

The Gulf War changed everything for Raytheon. When Patriot missiles saw action in 1991, sales outside the U.S. spiked. It wasn’t just a spike. It was a signal. The company needed to dominate defense electronics.

So it bought.

In 1996, Raytheon snapped up Chrysler’s defense electronics and aircraft modification units. A year later, it picked up Texas Instruments’ defense electronics and Hughes Electronics. Hughes made missiles. A lot of them.

They also sold off the fluff. Amana refrigerators left the building. The goal was clear. Become the leader. Not just a player. The leader.

From Raytheon to Raytheon Technologies

The 1990s saw aggressive buying. The 2000s saw trimming.

In 2007, Raytheon sold its aircraft subsidiary. The Beech and Hawker lines went to investors who rebranded the new entity as Hawker Beechcraft, Inc. Raytheon was moving up the value chain. Leaving consumer goods and general aviation behind.

The real shift came later.

United Technologies Corporation spun off Carrier and Otis. Then it merged with Raytheon. The deal closed on April 3, 2020.

The result was Raytheon Technologies Corporation.

Headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts at first. The move to Arlington, Virginia happened in 2022. Then came the rebrand.

In July 2023, the name changed again.

RTX Corporation.

It wasn’t just a name change. It was a unified identity for a merged business. Aerospace and defense. Exclusively.

How RTX is structured and where the money comes from

Post-merger, the structure was complex. Four segments.

Collins Aerospace. Pratt & Whitney. Raytheon Intelligence & Space. Raytheon Missiles & Defense.

That changed in 2023. Consolidation into three divisions.

As of 2024, the scale is hard to ignore. 195,000 employees worldwide.

$80.8 billion in annual sales.

Where does that money come from? Roughly two-thirds is commercial aerospace. The rest is defense. Products and services.

The mix matters. Defense contracts are sticky. Commercial aerospace is cyclical. RTX sits in the middle of both.

Who runs RTX now

Leadership transitions don’t happen overnight.

Gregory J. Hayes, former CEO of United Technologies, was the first chief executive of Raytheon Technologies. He ran the show from 2020 to 2024.

Thomas A. Kennedy, Raytheon’s longtime CEO, became executive chairman. He helped integrate the merger.

The board had 15 members. Representatives from both companies.

Christopher T. Calio took over as CEO in May 2024. Elected chairman in 2025.

The handoff was clean. The strategy remained focused.

Legal issues and what they cost

Mergers bring legacy problems to the surface.

RTX wasn’t immune.

In 2023, Pratt & Whitney faced a crisis. Geared-turbofan engines had a manufacturing flaw. Powdered-metal issues.

Hundreds of aircraft affected. Multiyear maintenance plans required. A global recall and inspection program launched.

Then came the legal reckoning.

In 2024 and 2025, RTX resolved investigations. Legacy Raytheon operations. Rockwell Collins operations. U.S. and international.

The price tag was steep.

“The company agreed to pay more than $950 million in combined criminal and civil penalties for alleged bribery and procurement-fraud violations.”

That’s separate from a $200 million settlement with the U.S. State Department under the Arms Export Control Act.

Most of the conduct happened before the 2020 merger.

RTX claims it changed oversight. Prevented similar violations.

The money is gone. The reputation damage is partial. The operational changes remain.

Why the shift to defense and aerospace matters

The transition from a diversified conglomerate to a pure-play defense and aerospace firm wasn’t accidental.

Raytheon bought Hughes. Bought Chrysler’s defense. Sold Amana.

UTC spun off its building products. Merged with Raytheon.

Now RTX is about two things.

But the risks are specific.
