BMW has unveiled its all-new i3, the second vehicle built on its groundbreaking “Neue Klasse” EV platform. This isn’t a revival of the original compact i3, but a fully electric version of the iconic 3 Series, poised to become one of BMW’s most important models given the 3 Series’ global sales volume. The arrival of this model marks a pivotal moment for the company, as it represents the largest single financial investment in BMW’s history.
The Neue Klasse Advantage
The i3 benefits from years of development in BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, introducing new motors, inverters, batteries, and charging technology. The heart of the system is a powerful centralized computer designed to enhance driving dynamics, as demonstrated by the performance of the earlier iX3 model.
The new batteries utilize “cell-to-pack” technology with liquid-cooled cylindrical cells, boosting energy density by 20%. An 800-volt architecture allows for faster charging, achieving up to 400 kilowatts. But the biggest breakthrough is the 560-mile (WLTP) range, surpassing the iX3’s 500-mile capability. The i3 xDrive delivers 469 horsepower and 645 Newton-meters of torque, making it a compelling alternative to traditional combustion engines.
Beyond Range: Bidirectional Charging and Vehicle Integration
The i3 offers more than just long range. It features vehicle-to-load (V2L) for powering external devices, vehicle-to-home (V2H) for feeding energy back into your house, and even vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities, allowing customers to sell excess power back to the energy market.
The i3 also includes “Soft Stop,” a brake recuperation system that minimizes jerking during deceleration. This feature is so refined that it outperforms the braking systems in BMW’s luxury Rolls-Royce Spectre.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the i3 mirrors the iX3 with a responsive central screen controlling most functions. A panoramic display spans the windscreen, showing speed, navigation, and battery data, though customization options remain limited. The digital assistant has been upgraded to Alexa+, with hopes for improved reliability after past issues with responsiveness.
A Changing Landscape
The i3 arrives at a critical time, as global oil prices fluctuate and automakers reconsider their EV strategies. While BMW is doubling down on electric, the competition is fierce. Notably, Chinese automaker BYD recently unveiled its second-generation Blade battery, which boasts even faster charging speeds (10-70% in five minutes) and a claimed range exceeding 620 miles. This rapid advancement in battery technology poses a challenge to BMW’s long-term dominance.
Despite the competition, the i3’s impressive range, advanced technology, and refined driving experience position it as a strong contender in the electric vehicle market.
Ultimately, the BMW i3 is a bold step forward for the automaker. But it also faces a rapidly evolving landscape where innovation is constant, and the lead can shift in a matter of months.
